Hello! I just stumbled upon your site in search of an answer to the “designing for mobile devices” question.

I am a graphic designer, w/ SOME experience in website design. I’m in need of building a site for my portfolio which I was GOING to build in Flash in order to showcase some of my Flash skills. Now though, I’m not sure what to do since I don’t want to build 2 sites –

I realize this is not a new question in the web design world, but can you give me some advice on what would be the best option for me to still be able to add a few cool rollovers and animations while not compromising the accessibility & not creating 2 sites?

    Thank you in advance!

    1. This question increasingly has to do with what platforms you are targeting. If you are building a website – to be accessed via browser – and employing simple rollovers and such: I’d probably go with something like jQuery or even Adobe Edge for this sort of thing.

Flash is a great choice for many types of content but for the widest reach across devices (if you care about iOS) – I’d go with an HTML & Friends solution.

Incidentally, Adobe Edge is quite simple for Flash designers to pick up :)

      1. I agree with Joseph to a point. It DOES depend on your target platform. However, you’re specifically saying you’d like to showcase your Flash skills. If that’s the case I think you should build it twice. Building things twice, three times over is pretty much a Flash skill these days because of our crazy ecosystem. In fact, you’ll usually find that you make it better the second time JUST because you’re doing it again.

You may want to get creative and build smaller components rather than a full page Flash site. Swap things out where you can with Flash and really use its capabilities to outshine what you can do in CSS/JS.

Make those components degrade gracefully from Flash to HTML.

        That’s my suggestion anyways!
