Flash iOS Apps Cookbook – Book Review

I recently acquired and was able to read over the Flash iOS Apps Cookbook by Christopher Caleb. The book is available from Packt in both print and digital formats. I was interested in reading this particular book since I authored the comparable Android-focused volume; Flash Development for Android Cookbook. As someone who has never developed AIR applications specifically for iOS, I thought it would be an interesting read.

Something that came across as immediately useful was an introduction to the iOS app signing and submission rules and structures provided in the very first chapter. Coming from Android development, I am well aware that developing for iOS involves many more steps – getting all of this set up and out of the way at the beginning of the books then allows the reader to focus on developing their application and being able to effectively test it an a device.

This is followed up with a chapter focused on setting up your environment to work with Flash. Which, of course, has to be included at the beginning of the book else the reader won’t be able to do much of anything when following the various recipes in later chapters :)

The remaining bulk of the book is a variety of categorized recipes for performing certain actions and achieving functionality using AIR for iOS. The book covers everything from working with screen resolution, hardware acceleration, geolocation, accelerometer, multi-touch, gestures, camera and microphone access, orientation, connectivity, and much more. Really quite a comprehensive list of solutions!

In review, I found this book to be comprehensive in its treatment of developing iOS applications using Flash and Adobe AIR. It is well-researched, well-written, and though I had no prior experience with iOS development… I found it to be an enjoyable overview.
