Agenda
It’s the first half of 2011 and Adobe’s Open Screen Project initiative has started to really gather some momentum. From a vision of grandeur to the assimilation of a number of different devices and form factors, the Open Screen Project is well on it’s way to becoming a fully realized reality. From Windows, Mac, Linux, to Android, QNX, iOS, and WebOS Adobe has significantly increased the audience consuming ActionScript-based applications on devices from Desktop, web, tablet, mobile, and TV. Come hear how this initiative looks from the eyes of your peers, fellow ActionScript and Flex developers. Gain some insight on how to ride this multi-screen wave of the future.

Get Down n’ Dirty with Mobile Flex 4.5 Projects
This session will explore the mobile Flex framework from the perspective of a project currently in development for the University of Denver targeting Google Android, Apple iOS, and the Blackberry Tablet OS. Joseph will discuss workflow differences when moving from desktop to mobile, and perform a detailed overview of the project in the current state of development. We’ll also discuss differences and problems that can occur when building and deploying for a variety of mobile platforms; particularly Android and Tablet OS.

The act of gathering the recording skipped my mind until I was asked to be on the upcoming RMAUG-organized “Open Screen Project: Views From the Trenches” panel at the upcoming 360|Flex conference. With this remembrance in place, I was able to get a recording of my talk… presented below.

D2WC Speaker

Thrilled to announce that I will be speaking in the mobile track for the upcoming Designer/Developer/Mobile Workflow Conference (D2WC)!

One of my goals for this year was to attend and present at a few conferences that I’d never been to before; as I think it’s important to move beyond ordinary paths every so often. Well, so far I am attending 360|Flex and speaking at D2WC and Ignite Denver – so this goes a long way to fulfill that goal. I’ll hopefully be able to make my regular appearances at the Adobe Summer Institute and Adobe MAX (including the FITC Unconference) as well. This would provide me with a new conference opportunity every 3-4 months. Not bad!

I really like the premise of this conference. I began my professional career as a designer and shifted to a developer role early on so that I would be able to easily move across the complete workflow. Most of the work I do now is still on the developer side of things- but design remains a big part of my day-to-day work, and my personal workflow between the two areas is always changing. It is an exciting area to focus on for a conference!

Adapting Expectations to Fit a Mobile Workflow

Mobile devices exploded onto the scene in 2010 with a number of new platforms and form factors emerging to the forefront, iOS4, Android 2.2, mobile Flash Player, AIR for Android, QNX, iPad and other tablets… not to mention the digital living room. A literal invasion of unfamiliar platforms and devices with their own, unique sets of peculiarities and limitations. Such a radical shift in technology demands a concurrent shift in how we design and develop for these innovations. Where do we scale back? What additional functionality should we keep in mind during the planning phase? What restrictions do we need to work into the design and development phases of project workflow? We’ll discuss these problems in depth and attempt to find some practical adjustments to the current workflow to make the mobile process a bit more straightforward.

360|Flex

Like a lot of Flex developers out there, I went through the trouble to author and submit a session proposal for what is probably the premiere Flex conference on the planet: 360|Flex. Earlier today, I learned that my session proposal was rejected. While I would have been quite happy had my proposal been accepted, I am actually thrilled with the fact that it was not. You may, at this point, be asking yourself: “Why?” Why would I be happy about being REJECTED from such a prestigious conference???

This is why:

   Yeah, I announced EC2 at the FITC Unconference at Adobe MAX last year… but haven’t done anything about it yet. I’ll be taking a different approach to gathering submissions this time; what that means, exactly, is up in the air. Now I have time to really think about this.

4. I will be able to RELAX!
   What? Go to a conference and actually sit back, taking in all the great gobs of information… chatting it up with other attendees… and not having to worry about presenting, myself? Sounds pretty good to me.

BlackBerry PlayBook - Tablet OS

In this session we will go a bit more into specific development for the PlayBook, including special considerations when developing for BlackBerry’s new tablet, and a look at some of the QNX-specific classes we can use in our AIR projects.

We’ll step though environment setup, including the Tablet OS simulator, SDK tools for Flash Builder, Throwing together a quick app and compiling a .bar file for the PlayBook. If time allows- we’ll also have a look at the submission process!

BlackBerry PlayBook

Join us Tuesday to be part of a group project to build and deploy an application to for the upcoming Blackberry Playbook tablet. Adobe and RIM are heavily promoting the new Playbook, and Flash developers take note – apparently, AIR is Native Code for the Playbook. If anyone in our group submits even a single Playbook app by February 1, our group is eligible for a second CS5 drawing this month – so join us, learn how it all works and let’s get crack
