Flash is King

There is really no denying it at this point for anyone who was seriously contending. Flash has the crown and is in no way giving it up.

After seeing what Alchemy can do at the keynote today, P2P multicast video, Durango, and Server-Side ActionScript (!) during Sneaks this evening…

Good God… what an awesome time to be a Flash Platform developer. I’ve seen more than enough in the past two days to validate all that I am doing, professionally. I neglect to even mention Flash Catalyst or Gumbo in all this- that’s just ‘normal’ stuff compared to what is coming down the pipeline.

I asked the JavaFX guy today why I should use his technology over Flash. His only remark was that Java was 13 years old… okay.

An amazing show of Flash over the entire conference and the competition is defenseless. Go Flash!

MAX: Education Pre-Conference

I was fortunate enough to attend the Adobe MAX Education Pre-Conference today and the reception afterward. The event took place at the Adobe San Francisco offices and turned out to be quite the nice experience. Special thanks to Claire Erwin, Gina Adams, and Megan Stewart for organizing this event.

Lots of great stuff for educators and those of use who work in educational institutions. Thanks for being willing to shift the focus!

MAX: San Francisco is Humid

I arrived yesterday afternoon at San Francisco International. Took the BART to Powell and checked in at the Marriott. Pretty tired after the flight from Denver. SF is like Boulder on steroids crack in terms of the atmosphere and unexpectedly very hot and humid. I was going to take my longcoat but chose a small jacket instead. Even that is too much.

I ate at the Marriott steakhouse restaurant- which being a vegetarian isn’t my first choice- but the food was excellent. Had a “Salt-encrusted Baked Potato” and a salad. Great potato! Then I pretty much crashed for the evening.

For today, I’ll be attending the Adobe MAX Education Pre-Conference sessions and picking up my event badge. Looking forward to the welcome reception this evening as well.

Before I left Denver, I also received the news that I’d been confirmed as an Adobe Higher Education Leader. Very cool.

Looking forward to a great time here at MAX!

Preparing for MAX

I’m spending a good amount of time the next few days preparing to leave Denver for San Fransisco and Adobe MAX 2008. This will be my fist MAX and will hopefully be a really nice experience with no mishaps along the way.

I’m speaking on a project of mine during the FITC unconference on Wednesday the 19th at 1:00 and have been preparing some quick slides on SlideRocket:

Sliderocket Presentation MAX

What a great piece of software this is.  I’ve played with it when it was still in beta but have never done any real work until this past week.  Really, heartily recommended over PowerPoint.

There are some really interesting speakers at the unconference and I may be attending these sessions with greater frequency than the MAX sessions!

I’m also attending the Adobe MAX Education Pre-Conference on Sunday and the reception afterwards.

If anyone would like to get together and chat during the conference (of if you want to recommend some awesome vegetarian restaurants in the area), please feel free to email.

Speaking on AIR at the MAX FITC Unconference

The topic of my presentation will be on the DUVAGA Projection System [VPS] and will cover why AIR was chosen as the platform for this application, the development period, and usage.  I hope to include slides, code overview, and demos.  It’ll be a fast and furious 30 minutes!

Anyone interested in an overview of Flex-based AIR interacting with hardware systems in an intelligent way should attend.  Other topics touched on with include Flash Media Server and media distribution systems.

Using AIR to Deliver Media Through Multi-Screen Projection Systems

Flash is a great platform for building multimedia-rich applications and the AIR runtime lends a great deal of extra power to make such media presentation systems truly intelligent. We’ll have a look at how developers at the University of Denver have developed AIR applications that push image/audio/video streams via FMS to classroom projection systems. Platform (and hardware) independent media streaming goodness!
