Recently, my 6 year old Canon miniDV video recorder stopped capturing any video aside from total blackness. A quick search on the Google led me to this:

It has come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in certain Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all.

Sounded like the exact problem I was experiencing. A quick email later and I soon had an RMA and UPS label to ship my unit back to Canon for free servicing.

Not 7 days later and I’ve got the thing back, replacement image sensor with complementary cleaning and checkup. Nice job, Canon- you guys are great!

Okay- this is a pure rant with nothing of value to anyone but myself.

I’ve been using an M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 for years now in 32-bit systems: both Windows XP and Vista. This is a great card- massive clarity above anything else I’ve ever tried. I’ve produced a ton of projects off of this card and it is tightly integrated into my studio cabling at this point.

Recently, I upgraded my hardware and took advantage of 8GB of RAM. To actually utilize that amount of RAM, you need a 64-bit OS. The whole point of this rant is that M-Audio still do not have any drivers for this card for 64-bit Vista. They don’t have any public beta drivers either- the drivers in private beta.

I signed up for the beta but am not holding my hopes very high. I suppose I can just deal with onboard audio until they release the drivers- but I wouldn’t want to actually record anything using that…

Just a real cramp in my gut. Let’s have at them drivers, already!

I own a Dell Inspiron 8600 notebook computer with the Intel 2100 3a Mini PCI wireless card installed. I’ve always had problems with this configuration and dealing will Dell over service issues the past few years has been nothing other than pointless as their service is non-existent… The main problem is that the connection (while “excellent”) just sputters out and doesn’t return until a restart and then sputters out again soon afterwards. So over the past year or so I’ve been using an obtrusive USB-based wireless receiver which works fine except that it’s a pain always sticking out of the machine.

So today I decide that I’ll either find a real solution to the problem or purchase a new Mini PCI card to replace the Intel. I chose to do a total removal and reinstallation using the latest drivers which can be found here. These are EOL (End of Life) drivers in that there will be no future versions. So if these drivers did not work then I really couldn’t expect to ever get this card going again. These are the steps I took to get everything working properly:

Disable the wireless antenna.

Uninstall drivers and software from both Device Manager and Add/Remove Programs.

Shut down the machine.

Physically remove the card.

Restart the machine.

Run the driver install routine.

Shut down the machine.

Physically install the card along with the antennae.

Restart the machine.

Have Windows handle the wireless connections (did not install the PROset software- only drivers!)

Create a connection profile.

This seems to have actually worked. I’ve tried a number of different solutions over the past few years and I know there are a lot of people out there in the same situation. Hope this helps someone!
